We need more of Chuckles the Clown
“I have seen what a laugh can do. It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful.” - Bob Hope
As it’s been said countless times before, during the past year we’ve been overwhelmed with the non-stop assault on our human rights, and the glorification of disinformation, hate, and intolerance from a plethora of quarters. We are also worn out from the abundant political ferocity from all levels of government who have lost track of their mandate to represent all the electorate.
We have also, for the most part in our current state, lost the ability to enjoy humour and satire.
As Bob Hope once said: “I have seen what a laugh can do. It can transform almost unbearable tears into something bearable, even hopeful.”
Recently one of my readers wrote to me to say that he’s going to do his best to minimize his watching or reading of political programs, articles, or interviews for the immediate future. And to the best of his ability, he will try to spend time enjoying family, friends, and activities. He went on to say his resolution will be difficult to fulfill but as difficult and as naïve as it might sound he will give it his best shot. He concluded by saying that sending me a copy of his resolution would enhance his resolve.
I responded by sending him an amusing cartoon that, by his response, seemed to help him on his way!
Indeed, his resolution made me think of Chuckles the Clown, the fictional character on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, an American TV sitcom that appeared on CBS during 1970-1977. To the uninitiated Chuckles the Clown’s character, and I quote here, “is best known for his off-camera death in the episode Chuckles Bites the Dust. Chuckles was known for his popular philosophy in verse: A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants.”
At this time of year, we need more of Chuckles the Clown and I will start by recommending you watch a TV episode considered to be the greatest of all time. During the ensuing days leading up to the holidays, I will attempt to add my authorship of humour and satire to it.
Here’s the link to the segment of the funeral scene of Chuckles Bites the Dust. >Click Here<
To be continued.
